Notes for: Mary Marshall Kennedy

One of the first five women at Newnham College. Dr Gill Sutherland wrote:
"According to vol. 1 of the Register, she attended the very first Lectures for Ladies 1870-1. That was before the house overlooking Parker's Piece had been leased and was available. So the women who came either lived locally or managed to travel every day.
If the family home was in Brighton, she couldn't have travelled every day. I presume that while the lectures were on, she stayed with friends/ connections in Cambridge.
Mary K was a considerable artist - the Newnham College Archives have a number of her splendid caricatures. Subsequently she studied at the Slade and then in Paris."
